LL-37 Peptide
LL-37 is a human antimicrobial peptide (cathelicidin) involved in innate immunity, produced by epithelial and immune cells, with uses including antimicrobial action against bacteria, fungi and some viruses; wound-healing promotion via cell migration and proliferation; anti-biofilm activity; immunomodulation; and support for tissue regeneration and angiogenesis, offering benefits such as broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity including against resistant strains; accelerated wound closure and re-epithelialization; reduced infection risk through antimicrobial and anti-biofilm effects; moderated inflammation to prevent damage while preserving immune response; and potential to aid chronic and hard-to-heal wounds.
What Is LL-37?
LL-37 is the active peptide released from the human cathelicidin precursor hCAP18, which is encoded by the CAMP gene. The precursor and its active fragment are related but distinct molecules; their names should not be treated as interchangeable.
Commercial research preparations are generally produced synthetically. This allows investigators to examine a defined peptide in experiments involving membrane interactions, signalling and structure–function relationships. The identity of the supplied material should still be verified against its analytical documentation.
Biological Activity of LL-37
LL-37 has been investigated for antimicrobial activity and effects on immune-cell behaviour. Its positive charge and amphipathic structure contribute to interactions with membranes, but biological activity depends on the organism, concentration and experimental environment.
Membrane disruption is one proposed mechanism; it should not be presented as a universal explanation for every antibacterial, antiviral or antifungal observation. Researchers should distinguish direct effects on a test organism from changes in host-cell responses.
The peptide is also studied in models of cell migration and tissue repair. These applications provide experimental questions rather than evidence that a supplied reagent treats infection or accelerates recovery in people.
Immune Signalling and Inflammation
The effects of LL-37 on inflammation are context-dependent. Describing it simply as reducing excessive inflammation or preventing harmful immune responses would be misleading.
For example, research in psoriasis identified a mechanism through which LL-37 binds self-DNA and promotes activation of plasmacytoid dendritic cells. This demonstrates that the peptide can contribute to inflammatory signalling rather than consistently suppress it.
Experiments should therefore specify the cell type, stimulus and measured endpoint. A change in one cytokine does not establish an overall improvement in immune function.
Tissue-Repair Research
Studies have examined whether LL-37 influences keratinocyte migration, an important process in skin wound closure. One investigation linked the observed migration response to epidermal growth factor receptor transactivation.
These findings support further laboratory research into repair-associated pathways. They do not establish that the peptide produces the same response across all tissues, concentrations or formulations.
Suitable controls help distinguish changes in cell movement from changes in viability or proliferation. Researchers should also consider whether the experimental medium alters the activity being measured.
Research Applications and Experimental Design
LL-37 can be investigated in controlled, non-clinical work involving:
- Peptide–membrane interactions and microbial assays.
- Immune signalling and cytokine measurements.
- Cell migration and repair-associated responses.
- Stability, degradation and analytical characterisation.
- Comparisons between related sequences or preparations.
Choose endpoints that directly address the study question. Record concentration, exposure time, preparation conditions and the methods used to assess the response.
A combination experiment should compare each component individually with the mixture and an appropriate control. Adding another peptide does not itself establish enhanced immunity or a beneficial combined effect.
Certificates of Analysis and Quality Assurance
For a 5mg product, match the certificate of analysis to the supplied vial and batch identifier. Review the methods supporting the reported identity, purity and quantity.
HPLC can provide information about purity, while mass spectrometry offers complementary identity evidence. A purity percentage alone does not demonstrate sterility, endotoxin status or consistent biological performance.
If a supplier advertises independent testing, manufacturing certification or additional contaminant screening, request the relevant records. These claims should be supported individually rather than inferred from a general quality statement.
Preparation and Intended Use
Follow product-specific instructions for storage and reconstitution. The stability of the dried material does not establish how long a prepared solution remains suitable for an experiment.
LL-37 is supplied here for research use only, not for human or animal administration, consumption, diagnosis or treatment. Qualified personnel should follow institutional requirements for receipt, handling and disposal.
Evidence concerning LL-37’s biological activity should remain separate from claims about the quality or clinical suitability of a particular commercial preparation.

COA Analysis
Selected lots are independently tested. Request the certificate for your batch number before the material enters an assay. Identity should match the stated sequence on the vial label.

Handling & Storage
Check the lot number against the certificate before the material enters an assay. Reconstitute only when the protocol calls for a working solution, using the solvent and concentration that protocol specifies. A prepared solution is not assumed to have the same storage life as the dry vial.
Store sealed vials at −20°C, protected from light and moisture. For research use only. Not for human or animal administration.
