GLP-1 (Semaglutide)

Semaglutide is a prescription GLP-1 receptor agonist used for weight loss and for managing type 2 diabetes. It reduces appetite and calorie intake, leading to sustained weight loss for many patients. In type 2 diabetes it improves glycemic control by increasing glucose‑dependent insulin secretion and lowering glucagon, reducing fasting/postprandial glucose and HbA1c. Clinical studies show cardiovascular risk reduction in some patients and additional benefits such as lower blood pressure, improved lipids, and reduced liver fat. Many users report better energy and quality of life alongside metabolic improvements.

What Is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a type of GLP-1 receptor agonist that mimics the action of glucagon-like peptide-1, a naturally occurring hormone. Semaglutide works through pathways involved in appetite and blood sugar regulation. It can reduce your appetite and help you feel fuller for longer, supporting efforts to lose weight alongside dietary changes and physical activity.

A GLP-1 agonist is not suitable for everyone. Choosing a GLP-1 medication involves considering the licensed use, potential benefits, side effects and ongoing monitoring.

Product Form Main treatment indication
Wegovy injection Weekly injection pen Weight management in eligible patients
Wegovy pill Daily semaglutide tablet Weight management in eligible adults
Ozempic Weekly injection Type 2 diabetes
Rybelsus Daily tablet Type 2 diabetes

Ozempic is prescribed to treat type 2 diabetes; it is not the semaglutide brand approved for weight management. Ozempic should not be treated as interchangeable with Wegovy without a prescribing review.

Wegovy Injection and Wegovy Pill

Wegovy offers an injection option and an oral alternative. The Wegovy pill launched in EU in July 2026 following approval in June, so describing it as available only in the United States is outdated. Local stock and prescribing arrangements still need confirmation.

A weight loss injection and a tablet have different administration requirements. Follow the instructions for the exact product prescribed rather than switching between formulations yourself. When comparing private providers, check the full treatment cost, including consultations, medicine supply and follow-up support.

Is Semaglutide Available on the NHS?

Semaglutide is available on the NHS for eligible patients, but access depends on the indication and relevant prescribing criteria. For weight loss, NICE guidance recommends treatment through a specialist weight management service, alongside dietary and activity support, for a maximum of two years.

Eligibility generally includes a weight-related health condition and specified BMI criteria. Lower BMI thresholds apply to some ethnic backgrounds. NHS arrangements can differ across Europe, so ask your healthcare team about the applicable referral pathway. Approval of a new formulation does not automatically establish NHS access to it.

How Well Does Semaglutide Work for Weight Loss?

The STEP 1 trial examined once-weekly semaglutide in adults with overweight or obesity who did not have diabetes. Published in the New England Journal of Medicine, it reported average weight loss of 14.9% with semaglutide 2.4 mg versus 2.4% with placebo after 68 weeks. Both groups received lifestyle support.

Trial group Mean change in body weight Duration
Semaglutide 2.4 mg weekly −14.9% 68 weeks
Placebo −2.4% 68 weeks

These results show that semaglutide can help eligible patients lose weight, but individual outcomes vary. They should not be presented as guaranteed results or directly compared with unrelated trials using different doses, populations and methods.

Choosing and Monitoring Treatment

GLP-1 medications for weight loss should form part of an individual care plan. For people with type 2 diabetes, treatment decisions also involve glucose control and other prescribed medicines. A GLP-1 receptor agonist may address several clinical goals, but the product and dose must match the indication.

Before taking GLP-1 treatment, read the patient information leaflet. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation. Seek urgent medical attention if you develop severe, persistent abdominal pain, particularly if it spreads to your back.

Whether considering weight loss injections or oral treatment, discuss the options with your prescriber. Regular review helps assess progress, tolerability and whether semaglutide remains appropriate throughout your weight loss journey.
